[Pic of the Week] : i carry your heart.

This week, as I was editing this set of family photos, I came across one that made me stop for a few seconds and think more deeply (which is not as common of an occurrence as one might think!). This is a photo of a mother and a daughter, and I don’t have much to say about it except this:  The mother/daughter relationship is one of the most complicated and beautiful relationships in the whole world. It can be a source of both unexplainable joy and immense pain.

beautiful and complex.
so beautiful and so complex.

A few  years ago, my mother sent me this poem on Valentine’s Day. It brought me to tears both then and now, and I want to share it here. I think that as complex and difficult as things get with our mothers at at times, most of them feel this way about their daughters (even if they’re teenagers) 🙂

By the wonderful e.e. cummings:

i carry your heart with me (i carry it in my heart)
i am never without it (anywhere i go you go,my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
i fear no fate (for you are my fate,my sweet)
i want no world (for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you
here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life, which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that’s keeping the stars apart
i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)
